The Initial Boundary Value Problem in General Relativity: The Umbilic Case

چکیده
Abstract We give a short proof of local well-posedness for the initial boundary value problem in general relativity with sole condition requirement that is umbilic. This includes as special case totally geodesic we had previously addressed [ 8]. The based on wave coordinates and key observation momentum constraint always valid umbilic boundaries. allows greater freedom choice conditions, since imposing also provides Neumann conditions three four conditions. Moreover, condition, being geometric, implies geometric uniqueness sense Friedrich holds this specific case.

The initial value problem in numerical relativity
The conformal method for constructing initial data for Einstein’s equations is presented in both the Hamiltonian and Lagrangian picture (extrinsic curvature decomposition and conformal thin sandwich formalism, respectively), and advantages due to the recent introduction of a weight-function in the extrinsic curvature decomposition are discussed. I then describe recent progress in numerical tech...
متن کاملThe Initial Value Formulation of General Relativity
The (Cauchy) initial value formulation of General Relativity is developed, and the maximal vacuum Cauchy development theorem is reviewed. There is a short discussion of the evolution equations and associated guage choices, and global results are mentioned briefly in the conclusion.

The initial-value problem is posed by giving a conformal three-metric on each of two nearby spacelike hypersurfaces, their proper-time separation up to a multiplier to be determined, and the mean (extrinsic) curvature of one slice. The resulting equations have the same elliptic form as does the one-hypersurface formulation. The metrical roots of this form are revealed by a conformal " thin sand...

متن کاملWell-Posed Initial-Boundary Evolution in General Relativity
The waveform emitted in the inspiral and merger of a relativistic binary is theoretical input crucial to the success of the fledgling gravitational wave observatories. A computational approach is necessary to treat the highly nonlinear regime of a black hole or neutron star collision. Developing this computational ability has been the objective of the Binary Black Hole (BBH) Grand Challenge [1]...
